The Villas at The Grand Del Mar
Making Owners Happy Makes the Difference
The thing is, “Papa” Doug Manchester, the renowned developer of much of San Diego’s waterfront, did not have to do what he did with his first fractional project. But he did. Inspired by the designs of Addison Mizner, The Villas at The Grand Del Mar are being developed amid the rolling, deep green Tom Fazio fairways of the Grand Golf Club at The Grand Del Mar Resort. The resort itself is located on 380 acres, backing up and winding through the Penasquitos Canyon Preserve’s coastal canyons, located between Del Mar, La Jolla, and Rancho Santa Fe.
What Papa Doug did was create spectacular 5,000-square-foot Villas, designed as two-story, fully furnished Spanish Mediterranean residences, with three large bedroom suites and four and a half bathrooms with a baby grand piano. In my experience, this is the only club villa that has this—amenity? object? furniture?
Whatever it is called, it underscores what Mr. Manchester surely knows: that great furnishings affect the mood of the owners. When I asked Papa Doug why he included the pianos in the residences, he said, “I thought it would make the owners happy.”
If the piano does make the owner happy, other aspects of the Villas will make them ecstatic. As close as the resort is to the Del Mar Race Track and the Del Mar beach (all between two and four minutes away), the Villas at The Grand Del Mar are in a peaceful and secluded location.
The Villas at The Grand Del Mar is the only resort development that allows those who choose the fractional ownership option to also have a golf membership in a Tom Fazio-designed golf club included with their purchase. The Villas are scheduled for completion in fall of 2007.
The Villas start at $400,000 per 1/10 fraction ownership. Each ownership guarantees 35 days of villa and golf club use each year. –Susan Kime
